Health Careers-Psychologist

Psychiatrists must have extensive knowledge of human psychology. They attempt to help individuals that are experiencing concerns related to mental health. This can include grief, anger, addiction, and also mental illnesses such as depression.

 

Duties of a Psychologist:

  • Interview patients to get a mental health history.
  • Decide on a path of treatment or counseling.
  • Speak with the client and try to help them work through their concerns.
  • Evaluate whether the counseling is effective.
  • Refer client to psychiatrist if case is beyone their scope of practice.

 

Work Requirements:

Psychologists must possess a lot of patience to listen to the problems of others all day.  They must have lots of mental and emotional strenght to help others deal with complex and sometimes very difficult issues and situations. Most of all, psychologists must be empathetic to their patients in order to gain their trust and allow them to open up about their concerns. 

 

Work Environments:

  • Hospitals
  • Private practice
  • Universities
  • Community clinics

 

Personality Requirements:

  • Be genuine and interested in helping people.
  • Proficient knowledge of human pyschology.
  • Be patient and very mentally/emotionally strong.
  • Possess great communication skills.
  • Be confidential.
  • Be empathetic to clients.

 

Education: 6-10 years post-secondary

Bachelor's degree in pychology.

Requirements vary depending on the province. Some provinces require a Master's degree in psychology, while others require a PhD.

 

Certification:

Provincial: Mist be a member of the College of Psychologists of Ontario in order to practice in Ontario and refer to self as a psychologist.

 

Courses taken in high school that will assist you in a career as a Psychiatrist:

  • Chemistry
  • Biology
  • Math
  • English
  • Psychology (if offered)

Job placement - after 6 - 10 years of post-secondary education your chances of finding a job are considered - Very good.

Mental health is an area receiving more attention as rates of mental illness are on the rise. It is estimated that 1 in 5 Canadians will experience some form of mental illness in their life.

 

Wages:

Salary for Psychologists vary greatly in Canada. Based on experience, Psychologists can make between $50,000 and $120,000, with higher salaries going to those with their PhD.
