Health Careers - Dental Hygienist

A dental hygienist examines patients for cavities and oral health problems along with routine cleaning of the teeth and gums.  The techniques used to keep patients from tooth decay and gum disease require a skilful, steady hand.  The hygienist also teaches good oral hygiene practice.

 

Duties of a Dental Hygienist:

  • Diagnose oral health and hygiene conditions
  • Dental impressions
  • Cleans the teeth surface to remove stains and deposits
  • Apply fluoride treatments
  • Teach oral health care and prevention

 

Work Requirements:

The dental hygienist works mainly regular office hours depending on the needs of the public.  They often work in dental offices or hospitals which are sanitary surroundings.  Most of their work is performed sitting down and requires good eye and hand coordination.

  • Private dental offices
  • Hospitals
  • Public health organization
  • Long-term care facilities
  • Correctional facilities

 

Personality Requirements:

  • Caring and responsible person
  • Good ability to move their hands easily
  • Good visual perception
  • Critical decision-making skills
  • Strong communication skills

 

Education:  1-3 years post-secondary

College diploma or university degree.

 

Certification:

Ontario:  College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario

 

Courses taken during high school which will assist you in a career as a dental hygienist:

  • Chemistry
  • Biology
  • Math 
  • English
  • Computer-related courses

 

Job placement – after 1-3 years of post-secondary education your chances of finding a job are considered – Very Good

 

Job openings in the dental hygiene field continue to grow at a fast rate, with more jobs available than qualified people to fill them.  Dental procedures will continue to rise with the improvements of technology and population.

 

Wages:

Average annual income: $60,000
